I was on TL the other day asking, "Are the Japanese buying commercial BL? 'You don't read BL through pirated copies?" I saw the survey for It's very much stuck with me. But I can't remember whose post it was!😖
If you can figure it out, please let me know.
And →
then I will write my thoughts on this question.

First of all, there are Japanese people who read pirated copies too. This is very unfortunate, but it's a reality. And as you know, many people are working hard to get rid of them.
This issue has nothing to do with the genre of the comic.

Here's the thing about BL: "Do BL fans who read pirated copies buy BL commercial works?" I don't know the answer to that question.
But, there is a special structure to Japanese commercial BL , so I'll tell you about it→
First of all, I would like to introduce you to how to become a Japanese manga artist. (There are many different types of manga artists in Japan today, but in this article I'll focus on those who work with publishers to create their work. )
(This story is going to be very long..)
There are many ways to do this, but two of the most common ones are You can either promote your work to publishers yourself, or you can be scouted by publishers.
And with respect to many comic genres, it's often the former. But when it comes to BL, many people are in the latter.
The reason for this, in my opinion, is the lack of people reading BL comics.
BL has a lot of great work, but I can't easily recommend it to all my friends, can I?😅
Fewer people reading means that publishers have a hard time doing their jobs if they can't draw work that sells reliably. As a result, there is less room to try out unknown newcomers than in other genres.
For example, if it's boys comic, people who like manga →
might be willing to give it a try. But with BL manga, sometimes people won't read it just because it's a BL manga.
That's why publishers scout for popular authors from the beginning.
So what kind of person is a popular writer?
One answer is that in many cases it's a Fan fiction.
Fan fiction is also more acceptable to newcomers because of the common denominator: characters. And even if you use the same characters, the writer's personality and abilities can be measured.
Next, let's talk about the fans who read them.
Fandom is produced by individuals as a hobby, so if you miss the opportunity to buy one, you'll never get it again.
This is why many people are thinking about buying the pieces they like. And they gradually fall in love with →
the author's own style, even if their first encounter with the author is a fandom character.
When an author you like becomes a commercial BL author, their reaction is divided. They are the ones who like the author + the characters and the ones who like the author's work.
The former likes the characters to begin with, and many people don't read commercial BL from the beginning. Therefore, even if your favorite author becomes a BL author, very few people are interested in or read them.
The latter will still support their favorite author when→
they become a BL author. And they're used to buying that author's work, so they'll still buy the legitimate version. of.

It goes back to the very first question." Do BL fans who read pirated copies buy BL commercial Works?"
To begin with, not many people who are interested in commercial BL look for pirated copies.

This is what I actually feel when I see people reading BL around me.
There are also a few sites that deal exclusively with original BL. There, you can find works drawn as a hobby. If you like original BL, you can look at those places.
There you can find original works by commercial authors, as well as individual authors who are not. →
Those are mostly free.
Also, these days various commercial BL works are working hard to avoid creating pirated copies. For example, they're offering a free trial of one story for themselves.
This is very long, but these are my thoughts.
I hope we can create a system of providing work that is fun and happy for all BL fans and those involved.

Thanks for reading all the way through!
