Hey #theatrepeople
A part of becoming a better community in this time of change and racial justice is to CANCEL, yes cancel, the @BookofMormon musical.

#WeSeeYou #WeSeeYouwat #Broadway
No this is not up for debate, this musical not only serves up an entire religion in a mocking way to a mostly non-Mormon audience

*by Mormon I mean Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
But this musical is LEGITIMATELY RACIST. Cramming in countless of African stereotypes into one village and calling it Uganda. While, again, serving it up to a mostly non-African, mostly white audience.
And an important thing that I’d like to note in this time that we are calling for #POC people to tell #POC stories, the creators of this show are not Mormon and they are not Ugandan...
...Even though they try to put a ‘wholesome’ message in the show, the material can only be taken for what it is: a mockery.

The same way that a non-black person saying the n-word will ALWAYS be an insult, these creators cannot responsibly tell this story.
Some say it’s all in good fun, some call it comedy or satire, and maybe it is ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ .

But the depictions and jokes in the @BookofMormon are still harmful and need to be addressed to come back as a better Broadway. #WeSeeYou #WeSeeYouwat
Final disclaimer.

The use of Morman in this thread was a shorthand for a Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. And I don’t mean to say that Mormons are intrinsically people of color, or minorities.
