Car max takes their inventory to manufacturer backed service stations just to turn down service work in order to protect their margins...

But keep buying luxury cars from there!
Did I ever tell ya about the the client I lost to car max???

Well I guess now is a good time
So I have a client looking for a M car...

If you know BMW M you know the prestige behind such a car.

But you also know secondary market doesn’t like it unless you private sell to a specific buyer who understands the car..

That being said M cars don’t just pop up anywhere
So me and the guy are talking I’m showing him an M3...

This dude is a nerd for the car but definitely by no means a car guy like he was learning about how to handle the car as we were driving.

But I can tell he’s a buyer.
I’ve tried trial closing him several times he’s giving me all the indicators that if price is right he will buy.

So we pull up I hit him with the corny “park it right here in the sold space...so we can get it cleaned up for you”

He’s feeling it taking pics and everything
We go in I go get the vehicle history report and our service report that shows the pristine care that the car was shown.

So we get all the way to the end and the guy offers me 6k off on a M car, at this point I’m thinking there’s no way this guy came Here to waste his time
So I’m digging digging digging and finally he says he’s seen a couple online.

I said okay great, let’s take a look so I pull up everything within a 200 mile radius even though he said he wasn’t likely to drive more than an hr for the car.
So being at a BMW store I could go in and compare the cars by equipment and their maintenance records.

So I’m showing him the other cars a less expensive because they have less equipment..

Or bad service history missed or non factory oil changes ect
So finally the best shows me the one car he’s looking at of course it’s at Carmax and on the surface

Car max has the car prices 2500 below the market and it has solid equipment

On the surface it looked like a great deal because my car was 4K more than that one.
So I offer to take a 1000 off the car.

I described typical life cycle and owner profile of the car

Trying to explain that a car like that should never hit a Carmax lot

Client thinking that I’m just a salesman looking out for my own interest leaves
In typical dealership fashion week now that my clients left my sales managers want to do real work.

So we start trying to figure out why the car was so cheap...

So I took the vin back to service and showed it to them, my service manager recognized the vin almost immediately
So without telling me what he had saw...

He promised, that I would see that client again...

I’m thinkin well shxt cool I’ll be selling him something let me just play it cool.
A couple days goes by the guys is ghosting me...

So I’m like tf he must of found something else...

I try following up several more times because he never told me to stop and he never told me he bought else where.
So finally two weeks goes by and I get a call from my service manager to come to the back...

So I go back there and he’s hysterical laughing...

I ask him what’s so funny?!
He said remember that car you asked me about... the M car, I said yea with a weird look on my face...

So he ask if me my clients name and I confirmed.

He says well He’s currently in service department having a conniption because he’s need 7k brake job and I won’t comp the rate
The worst part is the client had the nerve to call me asking if I had any connections in the service department.

With no hesitation I simply told him call Carmax to help him out with his bill.
My service manager was laughing because he said it happens so much with Carmax that he really should be thanking him for the business that he gets from them.

He said it’s always clients bringing in cars for the same work that was denied by Carmax,
The sales people at Carmax are innocent though most of them are very green as it relates to car business.

It was rumored that they wouldn’t hire you if you already had experience in the car business
