so i know i said no more tweeting about the two dimensional plumber game but kensuke tanabe is probably in trouble for that interview huh
its completely normal for nintendo to ignore fan input and do whatever the hell they want but its very NOT normal for a nintendo employee to actually go in to an interview and say "we read the feedback and we don't care, we're not even allowed to put hats on the goombas anyway"
i am editorializing but thats certainly the way that it reads. it was a super tone-deaf quote to drop the day before the game comes out.
nothing has actually happened yet but this is a level of tone deaf approaching the time that a NOA employee went on a podcast and badmouthed xenoblade fans and a couple of months later NOA got completely gutted and turned in to a Translation Factory with no decision making power
despite talking at length about it i don't have much real investment in the whole thing but hoo boy even I can tell that that was not the right thing to say when there are a lot of people that are more than just "disappointed but not surprised"
nintendo has never been inclined to bow to fan backlash but they definitely notice shit like "the game we're publishing tomorrow is trending on twitter because the director said something that can be interpreted as vastly insulting to long-time fans of a niche nintendo series"
i certainly don't think tanabe meant any harm by that interview, i don't think there's any malice to the way the paper mario team is treating the series, but also? extremely not the right thing to say the day before the game comes out dude.
i played ttyd for the first time this year and was totally open to giving this new game a chance and the tone of that interview immediately got me to say "yeah no i'll just watch vinny vinesauce play it on twitch"
how else are people on the fence with the new game supposed to react to a developer straight up saying "we don't want to make a ttyd successor and even if we did want to we couldn't actually do it because nintendo literally won't let us" the day before the game comes out?
it's super weird! it's a super weird thing to say in a pre-release fluff piece! you don't gotta be frothing at the mouth for a ttyd sequel to see that that shit's extremely weird!
its also very weird, as others have pointed out, for this dude to be like "yeah we can't put hats on the goombas" when there's a whole section of the game where the goombas and koopas absolutely do have unique hats and shit on and that area looks super cool
it's hard to shut up about this game when there's just so much weird stuff surrounding it. i can't help but wonder what the hell is going on with this Just Okay mario game
inquiring minds want to know: the fuck is going on with paper mario
what is going on with paper mario specifically where nearly every mario thing on the switch is a risk-taking experiment with new ideas, but paper mario has gotta stick to the template? they made an xcom mario spinoff with the rayman rabbids in it. tf is going on
They let Mario Party get rid of the car but they won't let Paper Mario put a hat on a goomba and call it some shit like Pauloomba.
for clarity's sake i want to say my feelings on this are less "RRRR FUCK NINTENDO I HATE THEM FOR THIS IM BOYCOTTING FOREVER." im just like "but why are you acting like that about this one thing specifically?"
not angry just deeply confused
