This was a great programme @djmillerJA.

I fully empathize with the stress that all of our medical professionals have been under for the last few decades.

What’s missing in this discussion is the fiscal context.

There are only so many resources GOJ has to allocate. https://twitter.com/djmillerja/status/1283769391268671488
This is why the economy matters.

If the economy is not fixed and we don’t get growth, these chronic issues we face constantly in health, education, security, agriculture, housing, water, etc. will continue to plague us.

Surely so many testimonials from drs re: meds shortage..
can’t be wrong.

I am sure that if you speak to any professional in security (police), education (teachers), etc. you will hear similarly shocking woes.

This is why management matters. Governance matters. The economy matters. Finance matters. Debt-to-GDP matters.
When GOJ owes a lot of debt, it literally has to prioritize that debt repayment over doctors, medicine, PPE for medical officials, textbooks, lunch money for students & unbroken pipes for clean water.

That’s the trade off that is made. Either debt or everything else I listed.
This is why I push #FinanceTwitterJA so hard. It’s not just about helping people to develop a wealth building mindset and giving them the tools to build their own financial independence, but it is so we all engage with policymakers and hold them accountable.
What we are seeing here is a bi-product of decades of mismanagement.

This is also why I am a huge fan of the IMF. If it wasn’t for the IMF & the financial crisis, that came and put us in a straight jacket and forced us to get our house in order, we would be devoid of hope.
The good news is, though, that things are improving.

At a much slower pace than we would like, but it is improving. As Dr. Tufton said 2,000 new nurse positions have been created and more permanent doctor positions will be created over time.
Thank you Dionne for shedding a light on this.

To all of the medical officials on my TL, thank you for thankless service. I know it’s not easy, but don’t despair. Even though it feels like it isn’t getting better, it is.

More resources are being allocated to health every yr.
As the economy grows, more will be allocated still.

Unfortunately COVID has complicated things significantly because it has created more strain on the health system and has deprived GOJ of much needed revenue.

So the improvement process may be delayed by COVID...
but there is no question it is improving at a macro level, even if it doesn’t feel like that on the ground.

Give thanks for all you do though 🙏🏾

Just keep the faith.
