I went to the Patton Museum in Fort Knox, KY today. On the way there, I stopped at the Fort Knox Visitor Center and was able to see the fortified United States Bullion Depository in the distance.
I was able to see the saber of CSA Col. George Smith Patton (Gen. Patton’s grandfather) on display. Interesting story of how it was retrieved after Patton’s grandfather was mortally wounded at the Third Battle of Winchester. Gen. Patton played with this saber as a boy. #CivilWar
A few of Patton’s items on display from World War I. He was wounded during WW1, but returned to duty before the end of the War. #WWI
The story behind Patton’s bomber jacket that he wore during World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge. #WWII
One of the things I admire most about Gen. Patton is his love of history and its importance. Here are several artifacts that he collected during his career that’s now on display.
Patton also took items from the enemies that he fought in his wars. The Italian standard pole really caught my eye. Mussolini tried so hard to emulate the ancient Roman Empire—and obviously failed miserably. Patton collected it while in Sicily. Some interesting WWI items as well!
My favorite non-Patton item that they had on display is this German StuG. It got stuck in the marshes of northern Russia in March 1944 & was then abandoned by the Germans. It was recovered in 1994 after being underwater for 50 yrs. The front left fender shows battle damage. #WWII
