Everyone should listen to this, think about it, and learn more about the "facts" that underlie these comments.
But let me explain, as a physician, my understanding of why this isn& #39;t the right way to think about it if we want to truly protect the precious children in our care 1/ https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/1283842082646433792">https://twitter.com/washingto...

Everyone agrees that kids need to be in school! It’s critical for their development and, for many children, ancillary benefits like food and access to social workers, wrap around specialists, etc. It& #39;s a risk-benefit analysis, plan and simple. 2/
It& #39;s very important to realize that "one size won’t fit all". The level of #COVID19 in the community will be the key deciding factor for the leadership of school districts around the country.. and it will change with time, requiring different strategies. 3/
The reason other countries have opened schools is because they have controlled the virus. They did the hard work early – lock downs, mandatory masks, tests and contact tracing – work that we (sort of) did but then lost when we reopened without precautions. 4/
It is true that IN GENERAL children have milder symptoms BUT there are children who have died and others who will have chronic problems from #COVID19. Children can (and will) transmit the virus to others – like their parents, their grandparents, the neighbors…who are at risk. 5/
IF we do the hard work now and truly control the virus in our country like other countries have, the schools can reopen (and, BTW, so can sports) but it means we have to ALL do the hard work. 6/
