I've been thinking a lot about the call for longtime artistic directors to resign "as an act of service." You don't hear a peep from any of the mainstream nonprofit artistic directors in terms of trying to save the industry.
You also don't hear a peep from any of the mainstream theater owners or producers. I don't need to name any of them. You know who they are and that they're probably wearing vintage mumus in the Hamptons.
These people are the defacto leaders of the theater industry and none of them are saying anything about ways to save the arts.
The Broadway League has straight up said that they don't know what's going on. The American Theatre Wing hasn't said anything. You know who is at least trying to help? Actors Equity. They seem to be fighting a war all on their own and it's very impressive.
All of these people should step down and actually let people who care about the industry take over. Make it more equitable. Make the content better. Cultivate new audiences and new ways of creating theater.
In the decade I've worked in this industry, I've wondered over and over how it could be so far behind the times. And now I finally realize it: The people in charge don't care.
You know who could try to step up? All of those second, third, fourth, fifth line producers who walk every red carpet and pose for every photo and buy every Tony Award they win for exorbitant prices. But they don't care either, they just want the glory.
