I keep seeing ppl talk about publishers that "take media rights" and I wanna say that in my limited experience, all that stuff is generally negotiable. If you're not a negotiator type (I'm not either, I get it) then that's what yr agent (aka the negotiator) is there for.
(yes I'm aware not everyone has an agent)
Anyway, barring a few spots where the whole "we own this actually, so you get paid mega-bank" is baked in to the contract (and you're giving up some rights to get paid above standards, so you maybe decide to make that trade-off) most everything is negotiable/collaborative.
if it's not negotiable (and they're not paying a handsome sum for that inflexibility), you shouldn't sign with that publisher. Your work has value as more than just some potential IP.
