LRT thinking about how I'm really glad I solely write for bandori and not a 'giant' fandom cause honestly? The concept of writing for a big fandom like MHA or something similar scares me. Reason being? The readers for those fandoms seem so... ungrateful.
Like, in fandoms with tens of thousands of fics, I feel like people just treat fics like they're disposable. They never really bother to support authors, or even leave a simple comment or kudos.
Now, I'm not stupid. I know there's plenty of people like this in Bandori. After all,
I still have the 10:1 hits/kudos ratio as mentioned in the thread and 100:1 hits/comments pretty much, as do other authors in fandoms all over. But when I post a fic, if I get a comment, when it's from a registered user, it'll either be from another bandori fic writer who's most
likely a friend, or someone who I recognise since they've commented before.
I like getting comments from the same few people, cause most likely they have some semblance of who I am, even if not as a person, they know me as an author. They bother to take the time to kudos and
comment consistently.
This is just more likely to happen in smaller fandoms. Bigger fandoms, I feel, treat authors like shit.
So many people just mindlessly scroll through big tags, reading and reading without ever bothering to leave a kudos. They don't recognise individual
authors, they just see content and content of their ships.
Of course, there are plenty of people who go out of their way to send their fave fics and authors love in big fandoms. But so many still don't. It's literally proven by AO3 stats. And whenever I see a tweet blow up
talking about fanfic tropes, the replies are always fic readers mostly. And this is def a personal thing, but the way people in big fandoms in those threads talk about fics just bothers me? Like I can just tell they don't think about how long the writing process takes, or how
much work goes into a fic. And it's not their fault. But when those same people just can't even be bothered to leave a kudos... it sucks.
Also, the way people talk about long fics is super annoying to me too? It's always 'wow it's so long what the fuck' and never 'wow it's so
long i really admire the author for putting in that much effort'. There's still tons of sweet people out there who will comment on every update of their favourite long fics, even if it's just a simple 'I enjoyed this' but too many people just really show off day by day that they
don't think of fic writers and how they are human beings at all. And they don't even realise it.
So yes, when I sometimes look at the most popular fics, or even semi-popular fics in big fandoms and get a little sad knowing I'll never get that amount of comments and kudos on any
fic of mine, I still don't envy writers for big fandoms one bit. They're more likely to put up with - sometimes unintentionally - rude and ungreateful commenters. People who just read all their fics and never even bother to leave a kudos. And it really sucks!
All I wish is that fic writers were given the same amount of appreciation as artists get, on the whole. Not everyone reads fics, and that's cool. But if you do, please leave kudos. And if you're feeling up to it, comment!! I swear 1 nice comment can improve a writer's whole day.
That's my ramble over. And also to anyone reading this who isn't necessarily like, a 'friend' of mine but still rts my fic promo tweets, and comments, or even just bothers to read and leave a kudos on my stuff - Thank you. You're fucking great and I do recognise all of you.
