THREAD.
Plan:
1. Schools should assume that everyone in the U.S. will start wearing masks today and make plans for a normal, 5-day school week this fall. Full-time, in-person instruction.
2. Everyone in the U.S. should start wearing masks today. Governors should mandate it.

2/ Item (2) is (at least politically) necessary for item (1). So let's do it.
The CDC says that masks could bring the coronavirus under control in 4-8 weeks. That gives the U.S. time to get the virus under control just in time for the start of the year. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/07/14/coronavirus-live-updates-us/

3/ Some Republican elected officials are starting to get on board with masks because they are concerned about 2020 election polls. Fine. That is the political system responding to incentives. Let's hope elected officials respond faster...
4/ ...in time for school districts to feel confident that things will start trending in the right direction again, and that in-person instruction will be reasonably safe by the end of the summer.
Fin/ The U.S. CAN DO THIS. We still have time. We just need leaders to step up. And we need the will to act.
Now is not the time for despair and resignation. Now is the time for confidence, leadership, and action.
