Supreme Court won’t lift the 11th Circuit’s stay, meaning excons who haven’t paid their court fees wont be able to vote. Three dissenting justices say it “prevents thousands of otherwise eligible voters from participating ... simply because they are poor.” https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/19pdf/19a1071_lkgn.pdf
The dissenters write that today’s order will stop the affected voters from participating in Florida’s 7/20 primary, but it’s also hard to see how this gets cleared up before the general election.
Sorry, July 20 registration deadline* for August 18 primary
There’s no majority opinion to answer Sotomayor’s charge that the conservative justices have hypocritically struck down court orders intended to make voting safer and easier during the pandemic, but uphold orders that make voting harder or impossible.
This is so chilling. Per Sotomayor, neither the 11th Circuit nor the Supreme Court are providing for any notice to tens of thousands excons who registered to vote on the basis of the stayed ruling that they might now be exposed to prosecution if they do vote w/ outstanding fees.
