[THREAD, re: questions & research]

"Do you know any good voiceover classes/workshops?"

Yeah, I do. I also know if they're good, bad, worth the money or just there for fluff.
How do I know?
Lots of research.
Why am I not telling you?
Lots of reasons.

A quick story, if I may...
Back in school, I had classmates ask me, "What's the answer...?" to certain questions. Sometimes they hadn't done their homework, taken notes or read the book. But I was a nerd, so they assumed I had the answers and would simply tell them.
Some of them didn't really know me or even talk to me for any reason... other than to get answers.

There were even those that talked down to me on every other occasion... except when they needed answers.
What I WANTED to say amounted to:

"Do your own work."
"I don't have all the answers."
"I can't answer that, it needs to come from you."
"I don't want to tell you since this is the only time you think I'm useful."
What I usually ended up saying was... nothing. And I would slide my work to them and they would [sometimes] say thank you.
If you ever were in that position where you asked those questions to others, take stock of that; the other person's feelings.

If you ever were the one who got asked questions just because you were smart/nerdy/etc... I see you. And you're not alone.
That being said, I'm an adult now... with knowledge, experience, degrees, resumes, reels, a portfolio and a platform.

And people STILL ask me questions, expecting I'll just answer them. So here's my answer going forward from now on:

Do. Your. Own. Homework.
I'm not your information collector.
Not your note-taker.
Not the vetter of agents.
Not your scheduling planner.
Not your travel agent.
Not your budgeting officer.
And I'm certainly not your personal search engine.

If I can answer your question in 30 seconds with a Google search, you've just lost some serious points.

Why should you even be trusted to use the info I just stumbled across if you didn't have the resources to find it yourself?
I get it. I do.

Sometimes, you want an OPINION on a matter I should have expertise in. Or you want to VERIFY a source as being on-the-level or taken seriously. And you might trust my advice because of what I do or who I am.

But here's my real advice: trust your own judgment.
I can't speak for you.
Frankly, I don't want to.
If you're going to succeed out there, make it on your own.
Do the groundwork.
Read up on news articles.
See what others have done.
And for the love of all in this world that is still holy: take notes.
I'm an educator at heart. I will never get tired of teaching others. I come from a scholastic household and will always nurture personal, professional, public and private learning.

But please... do your homework.
The more you rely on someone else to give you the answers, the less effort you feel will need to be put forth to achieve something.

Only in retrospect can you appreciate all the homework you did... when it finally gets you where you always wanted to be. /END
