It's Non-Binary Awareness Week! Let's talk about intimate partner violence (IPV) and non-binary people.

Our film is about a cis man abusing a cis woman, which is the dynamic of IPV in most cis, heterosexual relationships. However, people of all genders can experience violence.
A Better Man's online resources ( http://abettermanfilm.com/resources ) use non-gendered language, like "people who experience violence". We wanted non-binary folks, and those in queer relationships, to see themselves in our resources. Non-binary people experience high rates of IPV.
Not only do non-binary folks experience high rates of violence, they may have a hard time getting help.

Many support services (particularly shelters) were designed to serve cis women, and have limited accessibility for non-binary people.
-According to the 2015 US Transgender Survey, 54% of trans and non-binary people have experienced IPV
-One 2015 study found 89% of trans and non-binary youth had experienced IPV
-In a 2011 FORGE study of 1,000 trans and non-binary people, 61% said they wouldn't use an IPV agency
It's important to note that research on non-binary people and intimate partner violence is limited - especially in Canada - and often categorizes non-binary people as transgender, which is not how all non-binary people identify.
Those who use violence against non-binary people may directly attack their gender identity or expression. This could look like:
-Using slurs relating to their gender
-Threatening to "out" the person
-Restricting access to items crucial for gender expression, like binders or wigs
