"...most people in your family will never buy your book. Most of your friends won’t either."

Your book is like someone else's wedding. Everyone is enthusiastic, because they know they should be, but really it's only significant to the people that are directly involved. For everyone else it's just an event that costs time and money.
I know that's cynical, but it's true. You might think a week long party in Ibiza is the prefect way to celebrate your union, but for everyone else it's just an expensive holiday where they don't get to do what they want.
And publishing a book is the same. It means a lot to us, the authors, because we know how much effort has gone into it. But for everyone else it's a sudden blip, a brief moment in time, to be celebrated, but ultimately just that thing you've been saying you'll do for years.
You can judge your friends and family for not buying your book if you want to, it won't help the situation. We all pretend enthusiasm for things just to be polite. Much better to be thankful for those that do show support, and forgive those don't.
They're not trying to be hurtful, it just doesn't matter to them as much as you think it should, and that is your problem, not theirs.

OK, not where I thought this thread was going, but hell, I'm sticking with it. Because whilst it might not be "fun", it is at least true.
