Last night a woman broke the glass of the storefront below us. My girlfriend asked her why from the safety of the 3rd floor window. The woman calmly explained she was trying to get locked up because the shelters were full and she had nowhere to go. Moss Park. People need shelter.
The woman also said she had earlier tried assaulting someone to get locked up, but it didn’t work. More glass was broken. Someone called the cops (risky). Cops said they would hold her for the night, but that’s it. People need mental health support.
I don’t often feel threatened here. Occasionally. And glass is glass: just stuff. But, living here, you really get a clear picture of all the ways this City fails people. Things we scramble to address in a crisis are same things that will hit the chopping block in “recovery.”
Not for nothing, here’s earlier that day, a few blocks away. I keep hearing no one is removed from a tent without being housed somewhere else. Is that what’s communicated here? https://twitter.com/esn_to/status/1283541008962260992?s=21 https://twitter.com/esn_to/status/1283541008962260992
