I have been thinking, non-stop, about the environment that has led to the #labarexam cancellation.

There was a right way to do this, and this announcement that the bar is cancelled without a solution or explanation isn't fair. I hope the Supreme Court has one for us soon.
I've seen a lot of folks blame the LSBA, but, in reality, the LSBA won't contradict the Supreme Court or COBA (or argue that they did wrong). Our bar depends on and is a part of that system.

That doesn't mean LSBA is exempt from helping or showing empathy--they should--right now
In reality, this environment is a part of a nationwide, larger system of privilege, ageism and amnesia by the older lawyers in control of the legal profession.

They went to law school for $400 a semester, for example. Their first DUI didn't require inpatient rehab, either.
I'm not saying it was easier to be a lawyer in 1990--far from it. I'm saying that the practice of law is run by folks who don't appreciate what it is like to be a young lawyer, today

To them, it's not about student loans or mortgages. It's about young lawyers knowing their place
I've had some experience with this myself in the profession: there are "leaders" who treat young lawyers like children to be scolded, seen and not heard.

I am not a bar president. But I am a lawyer and elected to bar leadership. I am a young lawyer who cares about these ADULTS.
These PROFESSIONALS with mortgages, children, and student loans.

They are worried the market is about to be flooded with qualified (barred) lawyers in the interregnum. Worried about loan cos coming after them even though through they may not be able to earn a living.
My hope is that lawyers will be a part of the solution so that when these (mostly young) adults become new lawyers, they will remember that their fellow members of the profession went to bat for them instead of blindly believing the kids have it easy these days.
