My partner and I were talking last night, and then we got into how bad many college faculty actually are. What's your worst story? Mine was as follows: I arrived at undergrad with a love of renaissance drama. Enjoyed class taught by ye Olde dude and asked about declaring a minor
In a meeting, we went over my "public school" background. He discovered 19 yo me "couldn't even read Latin." On top of that, I didn't know Frech! Egads! Youth wasted.
After a severe browbeating about why I was "too late" to study the early modern ("You'll never get the langs..")
I left the room feeling for the 100th time that I could never study the West because of the high cost of entry - the caustic comments about working class values, etc. - and settled happily into my then dual African studies/Chinese major
Eventually I had to drop the African major because they wanted me to learn goddamn French - I needed a "major African language" - and my petition to do Wolof was rejected.
