As someone who reads social media comments as part of my job, it is hard to digest all of the accusations of "fake news" and disregard for facts and information. I often wonder why people turn away from information that could help them and lash out with vile, hateful comments.
. @rebareis recommended @BreneBrown podcast Unlocking Us. She has an AMA episode where she answers a question about "fake news" and why people are willing to believe what she calls snake oil. For anyone who deals with (waves hands around) All Of This, listen to this episode.
Brown had so many great insights that I wanted to write down. But the one that really stuck with me was "We are all susceptible to information that delivers us from pain."
People are in pain right now. There is so much uncertainty. Furloughs, layoffs, how to educate kids, how to stay healthy, etc. It's widespread and we are searching for certainty where it's not possible right now.
So it makes sense that if someone says things aren't so bad, the "media" is lying to you, etc. it makes people feel better about everything. It's easier to blame someone than to deal with the pain and the uncertainty.
Anyway. All of that to say, it helps me to understand people's motives. I don't want to be angry at the commenters attacking us and others. It does stink to read all of the angry comments but it is helpful to remind myself that people are struggling and in pain.
So, take care of each other. Support local news. Listen to the scientists and doctors. Maybe take a walk today instead of yelling at people on the internet. Go listen to @BreneBrown's podcast.
