I’m going to list a few details from the report that are particualrly alarming.

1. Although Black Americans have the highest COVID mortality rates in the country, Latinx folks are also suffering enormous inequities in COVID deaths. Here’s a list that looks by state.
2. These inequities do *not* arise from innate “biological or genetic differences” between racial and ethnic groups.

Instead they reveal inequitable risks of exposure to COVID.

For Latinx populations, essential labor, often without paid sick leave or PPE, increases exposures.
3. Health insurance coverage varies by state, occupation, and racial and ethnic group in the US.

But Latinx populations have especially high rates of uninsurance, particularly in COVID hotpsots like Texas.

This limits their access to COVID testing, treatment and primary care.
4. Latinx folks also have not been fully included in COVID recovery legislation to date.

As the report notes, “Substantial portions of the Latinx community, including millions of citizens, are excluded from [the] economic relief provisions of the CARES Act.”
5. Without access to vital economic relief, like that afforded others in the country, housing insecurity has increased among Latinx populations.

As a result, and as the figure below illustrates, Latinx households have disproportionately struggled to pay their rent and mortgage.
6. In addition, in mid-June, up to 21% of Latinx households reported not having enough to eat in the past week.

And the report suggests “42% of Latinx households with children may be food insecure due to COVID, the highest percentage reported for all racial and enthic groups.”
7. The report closes with recommendations to expand access to healthcare, nutrition and economic supports to those currently excluded, like millions of Latinx families.

I join @WeAreUnidosUS call to Congress to pass the #HeroesActNow and extend relief to our Latinx communities!
End. Let me just say, it is devastating to see these inequities ensnare children.

America’s investment in inequality, powered by racism and capitalism, is inhumane. And it hurts everyone, including our kids.

These kids are our collective future. We can do better and we MUST.
