If you are aspiring to create, I hope you are using this time of isolation as best you can. I know it’s hard and being removed Van mean listening even more to your self-doubting voice.

But I have seen a million times that people are more creative than they think they are. 1/
So give yourself a chance.

I was a hairdresser told by my family that I could never be a writer, to the point where I believed it. I turned down multiple opportunities to write because I listened.

A lot of those voices are false, claiming to be well-intentioned. 2/
And no voice is meaner or more sabotaging than your own, often.

Don’t judge your early attempts against the best, judge them against what you did the day before.

You want to draw, your competition isn’t Jim Lee, it’s the artist you were last week.

Make stuff, that’s what works. Create, and remember that the warts and mistakes are a blessing, they are a gift.

Because they show you what to do differently better than any instructor ever will.

Make stuff.

This time is a struggle. But it could also be your starting gate.
Cut yourself some slack, give yourself a chance to not be perfect. Learn to understand that the goal isn’t perfection, but progress. The joy comes from incremental improvement.

Creating things is free therapy, if you take time to appreciate your journey.

I see people all the time who said they couldn’t do something creative.

Then they do it and learn that joy comes from the very act of it.

It’s okay to enjoy the struggle, the path, the little victories. It’s not all or nothing.

Create and be happy for each forward step.
That’s it.

I know there are thousands of you out there that have told yourself you can’t.

The truth is, confidence doesn’t equal talent, insight or empathy.

Most of the best creators I know have doubts.

But they love making art too much to stop.

That could be you.
Pick small projects and try, remember each project is a step on a staircase, not the end of the trip.

And for god’s sake, have some fun along the way.
:)

That’s my speech for the day.

Also, eat leafy veggies.
