lotsa danish people following me now. i'm gonna assume you're here to learn, so here we go. amidst the whole racist ice cream debacle i'm gonna suggest the next step, which is that we collectively normalize calling us kalaallit (plural) or kalaaleq (singular). that name stems -
from a time we met as equals 700 something years ago, as it is derived from the old norse viking word skraellinger (still used by Icelanders). the word groenlaender is more fitting for the vikings that made their way to Kalaallit Nunaat 1000 years ago.
kalaallit (skraellinger) was derogatory to begin with but we claimed it and gave it a different meaning, so the problematic part of the word has since diminished and is perfectly fine to use as a definition to my people today.
another thing to normalize is calling our country for Kalaallit Nunaat instead of Greenland. i know you take great pride in the vast advancement of your ancestors, the vikings, but the island is now inhabited by a different group and i would suggest that you respect them and call
the island with the name the locals call it. i know some of you will say that you were there first and get to name it by your name, but with that logic we should ask the Dene, a first nations people in mainland north america, who were there before the vikings.
also, it's on-par with the eurocentric ways of naming places, which is "those who conquer gets to name it", and my people is clearly a winner here because your ancestors couldn't handle the cold.
you can also call us Inuit, which is more like an umbrella term for many different groups in the arctic. kalaallit/kalaaleq is just a specific name. another thing to know is that there's 3 different Inuit living on the island today. Kalaallit on the west coast (my people) -
Tunumiit on the east coast and the Inughuit to the far north. they have their own dialects and are culturally distinct from mine. some prefer to use kalaallit as an umbrella term for themselves, but it's better to ask individuals what they prefer to be called.
we need to work on our relationship as two nations with lots of history behind us, both good, bad and bad-bad. we're bound by blood now and i think we can do great things together as equals, but to become true equals the next many steps are on you.
p.s. remove the hans egede statues. that would be great, qujanaq.
