Early last Century, there was a young boy of 8. He was a brilliant violinist.

And a Child Prodigy to boot.

He had a performance in his School. It lasted 3 hours.

His parents attended.

The auditorium was full and gave a standing ovation that lasted minutes. 1/n
He was showered with bouquets and gifts. The boy searched for his parents among the audience.

Clutching his violin case & gifts, the boy ran home. His mother opened the door, hugged, kissed, pampered, told him how great his performance was, and how much she was proud of him.2/n
The boy looked searchingly at his father who was reading a book. The father raised his eyes and told him “You made three mistakes”

The boy’s world came crashing down. 3/n
He cried, shouted at his father for not appreciating him and asked “The whole audience congratulated me, as did my mother. Look at the gifts. And you had to pick out the three mistakes”

Father was not deterred “You still made 3 mistakes” 4/n
The boy threw his gifts and bouquet, went inside his room, slammed the door shut, locked himself in. They could hear him break his violin and a few other items, screaming, sobbing, wailing.

Mother was concerned. Father looked at her sternly to quieten her. 5/n
Then the room became quiet.

After 3-4 hours, they could hear the most soulful music ever from the room. The boy was playing on his spare violin. The playing lasted hours and hours.

Mother knocked the door for food. Boy did not open. 6/n
She looked askance at her Husband

He said “Let him be”
After playing non-stop for 9 hours, the boy came out.

Mother fussed. Father was poignant in his silence.

The Boy was at peace with himself.

“I am hungry”

Mother served him food. 7/n
No one ever talked about the incident ever again.

The boy practiced like a maniac from that day.

He went on to become one of the, if not the, greatest Violinist the World has seen.

He was Yehudi Menuhin 8/n
Later, he would reflect on that incident and say “If my Father had not been firm with me and pointed out my mistake, I would not have become the perfectionist I am today. However, if my Mother had not pampered me, I would have been crushed. I needed both” 9/n
When I started my Teaching, Mentoring career, I looked around and saw the environment was full of Mothers and hardly any Fathers. I decided to become the Father.

Do I regret it?

Absolutely No. n/n
