I always listen to & observe knee-jerk reactions of others when BIPOC folks raise issues caused by institutional racism. If the first response is to question/doubt the claim, then it's quite easy to identify performativity.I am watching folks prove their own 'woke performativity'
Phrases like 'Are you this is why it happened?', or 'It is not just you, we have know White folks also experience this' or 'I get what you are saying, but I the reason this happened is because...'
' I am sure it is not intentional' , or 'Your oppressor is just as powerless as you and they had no choice' or ' I am sorry you feel this way but ...'
I am thinking of writing a little 'white book' on all the phrases folks use to deny institutional racism and be complicit in the oppression of BIPOC folks.
'We have made so much progress, things were so bad when we first started'- really? As a privileged person, you are going to tell me to be grateful?
Please by all means discuss the next bid, the next research conf or the latest publication on racism and yet be complicit and silent about how your BIPOC colleagues and students are treated.
It baffles me that any talk about BIPOC folks' workload, salary, or recognition and certain folks feel threatened that this might happen at the expense of their workload, salary or recognition. In the words of Kimberly Jones, I am interested in justice, not revenge
