the first paid work I ever got that was 'enough paid work to actually pay the rent' came from Paul Laity at Guardian Review, circa 2009, so forgive me if am 'conflicted' on this issue
I think a lot of fury at the Guardian comes from misunderstanding what it is. It's not a left-wing paper, or even a social democratic one, and never has been, it's a liberal paper that allows the left a voice within it. Ppl defending or attacking it for being what it isn't is odd
a lot of the most hateful things - the majority, I would imagine - that people get het up about on here - come from the Observer, which bafflingly the Guardian allows to share its website. This doesn't, however, include the regular and gross transphobia
(also, if the Guardian were to disappear tomorrow, one upshot is that I wouldn't have to see Left Twitter sharing with me the latest take by (insert Lunchtime O'Booze Euston Manifesto signatory of your choice here), which would be nice)
but my main feeling is: don't expect the Guardian to be a left paper - give money to, buy, fund and share left media if that's what it is you want; this works several ways
