I fear this morning has brought out the worst on social media again. I see no rewriting of history in the removal of Guy Gibson’s dogs headstone, just a sensitive act in removing a word from an open memorial that, in this day and age, is offensive to the majority of people.
The name remains in literature, film, DVD and many other places so is not being rewritten or erased as people claim here. It is still easily found. The name is common knowledge and always will be how. However,
think calmly for a moment. The Royal Air Force is an inclusive organisation that welcomes all races and religions. It cannot be seen to be condoning or promoting the use of such a word in any context regardless of how certain parts of the public feel.
Sadly this was going to be a no win situation. Remove the stone = get trolled. Keep the stone = accused of racism. Let’s just move on and remember the 53 men who gave their lives on that raid.
