For those of you who are upset - predominantly white people - about the removal of the statue in Bristol City Centre that replaces Colston for a hot minute, please watch & read what is in this thread. You don’t have to change your view, but be aware of the conversation
It was created by a white, high profile, male artist who revealed themselves & had their name be the focal point in a lot of press/publicity. The sculpture is beautiful&powerful, but all it does it perpetuate the ongoing dominance that white males occupy spaces that aren’t theirs
This article by black sculpture Thomas J Price includes good points to learn from, here is a snippet ...
And this video where Simone Brewster, black artist & designer, also helps you weigh up where your feelings should be on this sculpture https://www.instagram.com/tv/CCqZcgtJB9-/?igshid=2p9167fadjz9
Celebrating BLM isn’t an opportunity for who’re people to further dominate spaces that aren’t theirs in order to receive praise, if Quinn really cared or acted without ignorance, he should’ve gotten a black artist involved & championed them. His name didn’t need a mention.
The art world is SO full of white men. This was an opportunity; this IS an opportunity to uplift black artists. I hope it sells for a fuck load so Jen Reid’s chosen charities see the money, and that Quinn’s name isn’t all over it when/if that happens.
