I — you do know Bury Your Gays is not like fridging, right? Like, Woman In The Fridge is supposed to give angst and purpose to a male main character but Bury Your Gays is because of the Hays Code?
The principle behind Bury Your Gays is that queer representation in media was on condition that it HAD to end tragically, always. Queer people participated to it to get scraps. Lesbian smut was written by lesbians writers but they had to make them die to get published
Hence “tragic lesbians”. Tragic endings for queer people were and are already written by queer people. It was so large in numbers that it became the norm. Queer ppl always ended up dying in stories because that was their lot. Some of them might have been written beautifully
But understand that we’re not out of the woods yet and that the number of tragic stories still vastly outweighs the non-tragic ones. We’ve largely beaten the straights in that regard. What the straights have that we don’t have is the vast amount of non-tragic stories
Bury Your Gays =/= giving straight characters angst, it’s dominant p*rn for the straights and forced cultural norm for queer ppl. You can write the type of representation you like but you have to understand where it comes from and what kind of culture you’re participating to
