One of those huge questions of 2016 not tackled until now - what do devolved competencies over e.g. agriculture actually mean outside the EU? UK government answer - whatever we want them to mean, we have trade deals to sign. Devolveds - hold on a moment... https://twitter.com/hayward_katy/status/1283654669412302848
And getting down to the heart of the issue - if London decides to accept chlorinated chicken in a US trade deal do the devolveds get a say in that decision for either the whole UK or their own part of the UK? There is no obvious answer as yet to that question.
Just to make the devolved situation even tougher, under treaty Northern Ireland will be following EU goods rules. There cannot be automatic acceptance of goods from London to Belfast. If the reverse happens, then all EU goods become automatically ok across the UK.
And of course what Northern Ireland has Scotland might like, politically, except that some in Northern Ireland would not to like have this at all. No doubt the future of devolution and the UK market is a complex matter needing careful handling. Will it get that?
