Diabetic Foot Ulcer! (DFU)

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is responsible for over 50% of all foot Amputations!

DIABETIC FOOT ULCER;
Is a condition very common with people who have been diagnosed of diabetes!
It’s a breakdown of skin tissues eventually exposing underlying layers.

Good foot care can help prevent it! DFU mostly result in Amputation if not detected early for treatment!

There are 5 grades of DFU
* Grade 0: intact skin
* Grade 1: surface ulcer
* Grade 2:deep tissue (bones/tendon or joints)
* Grade 3: deep ulcer, with abscess or bone tissue inflammation
* Grade 4: gangrenous (infected) fore foot!
* Grade 5: the whole foot becomes infected
What are the signs of DFU
* Pooling or drainage of fluid in your toes, or underfoot
* Swelling
* Foul smell
* Redness and irritation
* Escars( black tissue formation around foot ulcer)
Causes;
* Impaired blood circulation affecting blood supply to your foot!
* Irritated foot/heated
* High blood sugar
* Damage to some nerves
Treatment ;
The only effective way to prevent DFU is Early detection and treatment of Diabetes mellitus!

However, other treatments includes;
* keeping body weight off your feet
* Diabetic shoes
* Antibiotics
* Surgical debridement
Preventive measures;
* Regular washing and moisturizing your feet!
* Don’t wear 1 socks more than twice especially if your feet gets sweaty!
* Keep feet dry
* Pedicure
* Wearing proper fitting shoes( not too tight shoes)
