The girl who stands next to the smiling AH is a little Jewish woman named Bernile Nienau, who was then nicknamed "Hitler's child". How did it happen that they became friends despite their nationality? (1/10)
Bernile was born on April 20, 1926. Adolf was also born on April 20, only in 1889. The photograph of him and Bernile was taken in 1933. The girl is seven years old, and AH is, respectively, over forty. One and the same birthday will play an important role in this story. (2/10)
The girl was raised by her mother and grandmother, her father died early. It was father Bernile who was German. Her mother, Karolina Nienau, was Jewish. The mother was afraid for her daughter's future and decided on a bold act. (3/10)
On April 20, 1933, on a common birthday for Bernile and Hitler, she arrived at the Berghof alpine residence. Holding her daughter by the hand, she made her way to the front rows of those who met the birthday man. She hoped that AH would pay attention to her daughter. (4/10)
AH noticed Bernile and invited him to the residence. Learning that she also had a birthday today, he began to treat with sweets. They drank tea together, then invited photographers. So all of Germany learned that AH had a friend. She was even allowed to visit him at any time.
The friendship continued after AH learned that little Bernile was Jews. The Jewish pogroms had already begun, and the Adolf was still sending letters to little friend. (6/10)
The end of this friendship was put by one of Hitler's closest associates, Martin Bormann. He gave his leader "political information" on the theme that such relations "cast a shadow on him". (7/10)
Realizing that he was right, Hitler, with visible regret, decided to end his friendship with Bernile. After talking with his colleague, AH even said: "There are people who have a real talent to spoil my every joy". (8/10)
Despite breaking the friendship, Bernile's mother's plan worked. She wanted security for her family and she got it. When the Jews were evicted from their homes, the Nienau family remained in their home. Their family was not touched, what if AH still considers the girl his friend?
Bernile's fate was short-lived. In 1943, she contracted polio and died. She was not yet eighteen. Her mother survived all the hardships and died at a ripe old age. And until her death, she took care of the photo where Adolf and Bernile smile at each other. (10/10)
