The first of the #BlackLivesMatter rallies against Aboriginal deaths in custody was in 2016 on Kaurna Land, Adelaide in response to my brother Wayne’s death. This was organised by myself & @WARmobofficial. We situated other families at the time & had them join us physically too.
I’ve spent the last almost 4 years centring other families, alongside my own, in my work. I’ve published work on Aboriginal deaths in custody, I’ve sat in to support other families’ inquests, I’ve organised rallies for other families, I’ve fundraised for other families...
We actually haven’t held a single rally or event solely for my brother Wayne. It has always been to situate the wider issues of Aboriginal deaths in custody - because the issues do not happen independent of each other. What happens in our case will effect other Aboriginal people.
This August 3rd at 12pm in Tarndanyangga/ Victoria Square will be the first solo rally for Wayne to signify the first day back of the Coroner’s inquest. Where 10k ppl came out to march recently, I’m certain we’ll be pushing to get 50.
