1) After watching 5 other choppers get shot down, Warrant Officer Marion L. Mark didn't hesitate to take over the mission. He piloted his resupply Huey over the area where the soldiers below desperately awaited the ammunition he carried.
2) Machine-gun fire raked the chopper and mortars exploded around the LZ (landing zone) as he hovered 10 feet off the ground. While his crew pushed the ammo out of the door, bullets shattered both his legs, forcing him to crash land.
3) Warrant Officer Mark somehow controlled the descent of the helicopter, despite his tremendous pain and the continued enemy fire. He shut down all systems to avoid an explosion before exiting the bird.
4) His courageous actions prevented the Infantry from being overrun and protected his crew during the crash. For his heroism, United States Army WO Marion Mark was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
5) Serving with 176th Aviation Company, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 327th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. Officer Mark distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 3 October 1967 as pilot of a utility helicopter supporting ground operations in Chu Lai.
6) An airborne infantry company was heavily engaged by a numerically superior NVA force firing automatic weapons from well-concealed fortified positions. The friendly force expended much of it's ammunition and requested immediate re-supply.
7) Aware that intense enemy antiaircraft fire had destroyed five helicopters and prevented gunship support, Warrant Officer Marion Mark volunteered to attempt the mission.
8) Devastating machine-gun and automatic weapons fire raked his Huey as he reached the area, but he refused to terminate the flight. As he flew over the friendly force, the enemy launched a withering mortar barrage to prevent his landing.
9) Disregarding his personal safety, he hovered 10 feet above the ground while his crew pushed the vital ammunition out to the waiting ground forces. Machine-gun fire shattered both of his legs and forced him to crash land.
10) Despite his severe wounds, he skillfully controlled the crippled Huey and brought it to the ground. With bullets striking all around him, Officer Mark shut down all electrical systems to prevent an explosion and then moved to safety.
11) United States Army Warrant Officer Marion L. Mark's fearless actions in the heat of the battle, prevented his fellow soldiers from being overrun and annihilated by the determined enemy.🇺🇸
