1/ "Testing is up in MI, therefore cases are up", not exactly true.

Epidemiology🧢on. Let's break it down using SCIENCE - its our friend and helps us understand what's happening.

Data is publicly available at: michigan/gov/coronavirus
2/ Fact: Yes, testing is WAY up - 80.8% up over the last month, to be exact. This is calculated as follows: On average, 24,156 diagnostic tests were conducted per day over the last 7 days, compared to 13,359 diagnostic tests per day in the week of June 17th (roughly a month ago).
3/ Weekly averages are used because there is too much variation in a single day caused by, for example, differing work hours, holidays, someone called in sick and not as many tests were conducted, or extra personnel resultedin a large increase in # of tests conducted.
4/ Another important number is the percentage of positive tests. A month ago, using our weekly average, 2.35% of all daily diagnostic tests were positive. Fast forward to today, that proportion has increased to 3.48%. What does that actually mean?
5/ We conducted on average of 24,156 diagnostic tests per day this week. If we were doing as good a job at preventing the spread of the infection today as we did a month ago (2.35% daily infection rate), we should have around 567 daily cases. However, things have gotten worse.
6/ In fact, a greater proportion of people have been getting infected and our positive rate increased to 3.48%, resulting in an average of 840 daily cases.

If you compare the average daily cases, that is an increase of 48%.
END / In conclusion, wear a mask, wash your hands, and continue to practice safe social distancing. Why?

Because SCIENCE says so.
