An increasing number of cisgender people are putting pronouns in their bio, signature, etc. And sometimes others wonder why they do this, especially when it is “visibly obvious” what their pronouns are. As a trans person, I have some thoughts on this. On Pronouns, a thread: 1/
When cis people put their pronouns in their bio, signature, etc., I think 99% of the time they are doing it to indicate they are allies to the trans community. And, not necessarily because they actually think they may be misgendered by others. 2/
As a trans person navigating this world, it can be incredibly difficult and nerve wracking guessing who is going to be nice to you and who will not because you are trans. 3/
So it signals to me personally (and I imagine for many other trans people) that “Hey, this cis person is trans friendly. I don’t have to be worried about any possible judgement from them because of who I am.” 4/
And that is very comforting! With that said, some of my best allies do not ever post their pronouns anywhere. And that’s A-okay! I would rather you be a great ally and not force something you are not comfortable with, than try to be "woke" and uncomfortable. 5/
So, thank you to all the cis allies out there, both those who do and those that do not use pronouns in your bios, signatures, etc. ❤️ 6/6
