A myth arose during the unipolar 1990s that the United States had driven the Soviet Union into destruction with an arms race.

That was not how it happened. The stresses were within the USSR.

Also in the myth was the idea that removing Moscow's rule from the Soviet republics automatically brought democracy.

The Baltic States converted relatively easily to democracy because they had been preparing their government for a decade. It was a lot of work.

That misconception led to the Iraq War. Removing Saddam Hussein did not lead automatically to democracy.

Now some of the same actors in the Iraq debacle and others who have bought into the myth want to destabilize Iran, maybe have a war.

We must remove them from office and never let them have a place in public life again.
