67% OF NATIONAL DIETARY GUIDELINES INCOMPATIBLE WITH PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT
Our paper out now in @bmj_latest modeled the health and environmental outcomes of national dietary guidelines adoption, then compared with diets of @WHO and @EAT-Lancet (thread) http://tiny.cc/5n3hsz
Guidelines of 85 countries were quantified, then the health and environmental outcomes of their adoption at both the national and global level was modeled, then assessed for compatibility with global health (e.g. global NCD target) and environmental targets (e.g. Paris) (2)
On average, adoption of NDGs was associated with a 15% reduction in premature mortality, and a 13% reduction in the food system's emissions. However, 1/3 of NDGs were incompatible with the global NCD agenda, and 67% were incompatible with the Paris Climate Agreement (3/ thread)
87% were incompatible with at least one environmental target (image). Overall, 98% of NDGs were incompatible with at least 1 health or environmental target (4/ thread)
WHO's recommendations had similar health and environmental outcomes as NDGs. EAT-Lancet vs NDGs resulted in 34% greater reductions in premature mortality, more than 3x greater reductions in emissions and general attainment of health and environmental targets @sudhvir @brentloken
CONCLUSION: national guidelines could be healthier and more sustainable. Environment: more ambitious limits of beef and dairy in most cases
Health: inc. whole grains, F+V, nuts and seeds, and legumes, reduced red and processed meat, and clearer advice on balanced energy intake
