okay so i thought about this magnificent list of 41 lgbt characters in spn and i thought i would talk about them and lgbt rep in spn in general so here is a thread on the matter <3
first of all i would like to quickly state that i am cis so i cannot address the part about angels and demons being agender because it's not my place to judge wether or not it's good rep. however as a lesbian i have a say in what i think is or isn't good gay rep.
due to the way spn treats their lgbt characters i'm going to start by giving this thread a big tw // death because sadly there's going to be a lot of it in it, so if it's a trigger for you, please don't look at this thread.
this is not going to be in chronological order but i try to put the episodes in which the characters appear
Lily Baker (All Hell Breaks Loose part 1) : she is solely in that episode and mentions a girlfriend she killed accidentally with her own powers and she ends up killed by a demon before the end of the episode
Max Banes (Celebrating The Life Of Asa Fox and Twigs & Twine & Tasha Barnes)
never mentioned again after his second episode, has lost both his parents and his sister and ends up using dark magic to bring her back to life.
Corbett (Ghostfacers)
is only in one episode in which his sexuality is reduced to a joke and ends up dying at the end and being mocked about being gay, still after his death. it's just gross.
Dwight Charles and Rod (Sacrifice)
they're literally just background characters and have no revelance in the story.
Cesar and Jessie (The Chitters)
only in that one episode. they actually seem to have a happy ending together (we also notice the way dean asks them what it's like to settle down with someone who knows the life)
Demain and Barnes (The Real Ghostbusters)
only in one episode and only used to make a gross w*ncest joke. not rep. a joke.
Gilda (LARP and the Real Girl)
she is again a very secondary character, but her and charlie could have been a cute couple so on paper i would say why not. not a sufficient rep tho.
Eldon Styne (Dark Dynasty and The Prisoner)
i don't even remember him being confirmed as lgbt but anyway he is part of a n*zi family and he dies.
Kirsten and Siobhan (Fan Fiction)
background characters who barely have a whole line and actually used to parallel deancas
Max and Stacy (Lebanon and Don't go into the woods)
secondary characters but a cute couple who doesn't seem to have a tragic ending. tho stacy does get st*bbed.
Narfi (Unfinished Business)
i rewatched that ep like 10 times and i don't remember him being canonically lgbt. plus he also gets k*lled by gabriel.
Wendy Hanscum (Breakdown)
very secondary characters that gets taken by human eating monsters. also she wasn't confirmed as lgbt, she just wears a "love is love" t-shirt. so not lgbt rep.
Jenna Nickerson (Form and Void)
she mentions her first kiss to be with a girl. but she also dies in that episode.
The Chief (Criss Angel is a douchebag)
his sexuality is literally only a joke to make dean uncomfortable to picture him yet again as a big hetero dude.
Dorothy Baum (Slumber Party)
i don't recall anything confirming her as lgbt in that ep and couldn't find anything online.
honorable mentions to even more minor characters : Maggie Stark and Sue (Shut up, Dr Phil) who apparently are suggested to have an affair together. the random guy in (Season 7, Time for a wedding) who apparently isn't even named. David Roseman who is NOT in the show (look him up)
Naomi Himura and her wife (Safe House) who are very secondary and only in that one ep. Noah Ophis (Ouroboros) who just kisses cas on the cheek to poison him. Mrs B (After school special) who isn't IN the ep but implied to be a lesbian, and the "two bar clients" (seriously ?)
now all of those characters clearly are or are implied to be lgbt. but this is NOT good representation. all of those are very minor and/or dead.
but now let's see more important lgbt characters and why their representation still isn't good enough.
let's start with Claire and Kaia.
their relationship is very pure and they are an awesome couple and i absolutely love them. however, their relationship is only developed in one episode at the end of which, kaia dies.
chuck is bisexual. making the biggest bad of the show one of the only recurring lgbt characters doesn't sit right with me. if at least one of the main characters were lgbt too, i would be more okay with it. but rn it's just. no.
charlie bradbury. recurring lesbian character. not overly sexualized, her storyline doesn't rely on her sexuality, she is an interesting character, at first she seems like good rep. but she gets k worded by a n*zi only so dean can go feral in the next eps. this. is. gross.
crowley was confirmed pan by the actor. not the show. so not lgbt rep in the show. just like rowena being confirmed bi in a deleted scene.
then what is good lgbt rep you may ask ?

first of all, a character whose entire personality and storyline doesn't revolve around them being lgbt. if they don't have the same treatment and development as cishet characters, then it's NOT good lgbt rep. it's just pretending
good lgbt rep in a show like spn would be one of the main characters to be lgbt. specially when two of your main characters as so heavily lgbt coded (dean and cas). just have dean mention an ex boyfriend, or cas actually say that as an angel he doesn't follow human gender binary
and doesn't care about the gender of the person he falls in love with.

another important point is that more lgbt characters need to have happy ending. too many of the characters from that list have tragic ending, it's gross and honestly we're tired of this. specially if they
are killed of suffer only to serve a cishet character development. lgbt character are NOT plot devices. and finally, being lgbt is more than just the struggle of being okay with your identity. have your characters be proud of themselves and who they are. (doesn't mean it's not
okay to show the struggles most lgbt ppl go through just don't make it the entire story... we deserve to be portrayed as happy too)
all that to say that spn does NOT have good enough lgbt representation. most lgbt ppl would tell you that. making deancas canon, or even JUST having confirmed bisexual dean or pansexual castiel would change so much.

so i beg you, stop telling lgbt ppl what is and isn't good rep
and i'm going to end this thread with a reminder that all of you are very valid and loved ❤️
