a guide to my #1 favorite band in the whole entire world, talking heads: a thread :D
as the frontman & guitarist we have david byrne, who is one of the founding members. he was born on may 14, 1952 in dumbarton, scotland. he moved to the united states at the age of nine & spent the rest of his childhood in baltimore, maryland.
as the keyboardist, & often times guitarist, is jerry harrison. he’s also the original member of the band the modern lovers. (which is a great band btw!) he was born on february 21, 1949, in milwaukee, wisconsin. he didn’t end up joining the band until late 1976.
for bass guitarist we have tina weymouth. she’s dating the drummer of the band, chris. :] she was born on november 22, 1950 in coronado, california. she makes for a pretty badass bassist :-) and if you’re wondering: yes, tina & chris are still together to this day!
last but not least: we have chris frantz, our drummer & tina’s boyfriend. he is the second founding member of talking heads, & he’s the co-founder of tom tom club. he was born on may 8, 1951 in fort campbell, kentucky.
fun fact: he founded tom tom club with tina : )
talking heads started out as a 3 piece band, participating in the punk scene with numerous other bands in new york city such as blondie & the ramones. they played shows at a music club called CBGB for a couple years before getting signed to a label.
upon finding their fourth member, jerry harrison, in 1976, they went on to release their debut album: 77. some people disregard this album but i think it’s one of their best. :]
in the following year they met brian eno, who then went to produce their second album: more songs about buildings & food, and their third album: fear of music. 1978 was the end of punk and the start of new wave for talking heads.
after the release of more songs about buildings & food, talking heads started to become a little more experimental. they started making culturally inspired music, often basing their inspiration on artists like fela kuta!
they released fear of music and their fourth album, remain in light, while still being influenced from music all over the world. as their sound started to develop, the band started to expand. talking heads went from being a four piece band, to being a group!
adrian belew, alex weir, steve scales, bernie worrell, busta jones, ednah holt, lynn mabry & dolette mcdonald joined talking heads and helped bring their SPECTACULAR music to life!!
here’s a clip of talking heads in 1980 as a group!! here we have adrian belew as the guitarist, & not alex weir. he’s coming in later.. :] they’re EPIC, i think.
in 1983 they went on tour to promote their newest album, speaking in tongues. (which is a GREAT album, not a single skip.) during the tour they filmed their concert film: stop making sense. here’s a clip from the film with alex weir, ft david’s nerdy dance moves.
in 1986 their album true stories got released and so did david’s movie, true stories! in short it’s basically a talking heads musical with david as the main character. every talking heads fan, new or old, must watch it. and then watch it again. and again and again.
below is a talking heads playlist that i’ve put together for anyone who might want to start listening to them!
this is just a basic guide to talking heads; there’s so much more to learn about them beyond what i’ve mentioned in this thread. i hope you’ve all enjoyed! and i hope this can help bring together new talking heads fans! :]
