As #Virginia reopened, eviction proceedings began again. Yes, there are residents who are being put out of their homes during a Safer at Home Order. This is not ok! VA Twitter this is important! I need you to share this! Help get this info out…. A thread on #Evictions in VA
As #evictions were occurring, journalists uncovered how inconsistent things were happening across different regions. We also learned that some of the evictions that were scheduled were actually renters covered by #CARESAct eviction moratorium and should not have been initiated.
Also, join @VPLC and me on July 23rd for our Know Your Rights: Tenants’ Virtual Town Hall and invite all renters you know in VA! Register for free at http://bit.ly/TenantsTownHall95

You don't have to live in the 95th District to attend!
Here's where you can help prevent #evictions in #Virginia
1. Share this thread & info w/ as many as possible so if someone faces eviction they know what is available to them.
2. Contact all of your state level elected officials to say you support action to help prevent evictions
We heard back! Based on the official opinion, VA now has a more clear sense of ways the courts, General Assembly, & Governor can take better action with #CARESAct #HB340 & powers w/in each branch of govt to prevent evictions.
Here’s the Official Opinion: https://oag.state.va.us/files/Opinions/2020/20-033-Price-et-al.pdf
We heard the cries of the #protesters in #Richmond and other cities calling for action on #evictions - We heard the #landlords that want to work with us to keep families in their homes and also not lose their properties as some didn't know protections they had available either.
As reports are coming that #COVID19 cases are increasing in #757 #HamptonRoads and other areas, we need to work from all angles to keep residents safe. And we are hearing that Autumn and Winter could bring more #pandemic complications, so we need to fix this!
Again, please share this thread so folks have links and info needed. As a member of the Housing/Consumer Protections Subcom on General Laws & as a human being I take this very seriously. Thank you for help in sharing because info is power for someone facing #eviction

So 12 Delegates wrote to AG @MarkHerringVA to request an Official Opinion seeking clarity of legal options tenants/landlords have & actions elected leaders can take to fix a broken system.

But the legislative branch has limitations on when we can fix things: only in Session. The special isn’t set to begin until August and legislation from that may not take effect for a few months after that. But this crisis is URGENT as both a housing issue & public health issue.
