WORTH NOTING: Austin’s Budget is out, and the changes to the APD budget are… not great. The ‘millions of dollars in cuts to APD’ is coming from the previously proposed increase to their yearly budget. The end result: APD budget is decreasing by about 150k. (1/?)
APD’s percentage of the city’s budget is going from 10.096% to 10.093% let me break it down for you: Austin's overall city budget is decreasing by about 100m, so the proportion of the budget going to APD is actually about the same, even slightly higher. (2/?)
Some quick math shows that if you take 150,928 (what they’re losing compared to the 2019-20 budget) and divide it by 434,475,745 (last year’s budget) you’re left with... 3.4e-4. That’s basically nothing. It is nothing. (3/?)
If you have 434.48 and I take 15 cents from you, you’re not even gonna notice. So is APD losing out on millions? I guess, if you count hypothetical money as money. If you don’t, then no. (4/?)
So then, what is actually getting 'defunded' from APD? I guess whatever future budget plans they had for that monopoly money, they’re losing out on. And in actuality probably what they spend every year on, I don’t know, pencils for the police academy tests, probably. (5/?)
Here's my source. Pages 194 and 351 in particular. Also definitely got help sourcing this stuff via friends and people online, before validating it myself. https://bit.ly/2B2LPXv  (6/6)
