Midfield meastro Frenkie de jong at Barca so far
****Thread****

He rates his own season a 7 and is critical of himself and always tries to improve, I love that about him

Barca fans would rate his first season about the same or even a 6.

Decided to write this to show why
Let's first look at his strengths:

Dribbling, at pace and small spaces
Line breaker, passing, dribbling
Pace on midfield
Tireless
Vision

He can improve on goal thread, but I would argue that that is unimportant in his midfield type
Next let's look at his time at Ajax and the marvelous run they had in the 18/19 season and his role in it.

Erik ten hag build the team around him, he even admitted that in several interviews, before the start of the season look the best role he could play.
Erik ten hag saw this as vital part of the team as Frenkie was one of the brightest talents In the team and he saw that he could be the engine

He set up the midfield 3 with 2 deep lying center mids and an attacking mid.

His buddy staying behind when he would go on a dribble
If we look at one of the performances that everyone remembers, against real Madrid in the champions League, we can see in the average position below, that he likes to control the play from deep and carry the ball forward or perform a line breaking pass rarely passing backwards.
There is numerous maps I can show as above at his time at Ajax that will prove he was best played there.

His ability to dribble out of pressure is also a vital skill in the above as Ajax would play high up the pitch and build from the back. All Ajax attacks would start with him
At Ajax he thrived in a double pivot system, in the Dutch National team Koeman also wanted to optimise the use of Frenkie, however played him as a sole DM most of the time.

See below of one of his stand out performances against Germany in the nation's league
Both systems and style of midfield play suit Frenkie and he can go on his driving dribbles and find the line breaking passes

He likes to demand the ball in his feet and be instrumental in the build up.

Since joining Barcelona this has been different
When I was looking at the average positions of Frenkie at Barca it was usually as below...

Coaches seemingly telling him to hug the opponents back lines and try and run in behind. Also pushing him to the wing sometimes. This is a completely new role and something he never played
He still managed to be involved in a lot of play and to his credit claimed a lot of starts. I just always found it such a shame he was played so much forward and not in a double pivot with Busi as I think that would be magic.

Especially now with Puig maybe in that AM spot
I hope we get to see the real Frenkie In Barcelona soon as we love him in the Netherlands!
