THREAD: So I've seen in response to the whole @nickcannon, et al deal the lamentation that the "bonds made Blacks and Jews during the Civil Rights movement have frayed/what happened?"
So let's talk about that. The problem with the 60's myth is that it just that: a myth. When ppl say "Jews" fought for Civil Rights, what Jews are they talking about? Bc some never left that "alliance". Julius Lester never left. Charles McDew never left.
Oh, are you really saying *White* Jews fought for Civil Rights, and what happened to *that* relationship? So lets talk about THAT then, which is a whole different thing to unpack.
Least of not which being that the White Jewish leaders of the time *TOLD* White Jews that the movements would eventually grow past each other, but that *NOW* was the time to be present.
But White Jews didnt want to hear that, and crafted this fiction of "Jews & Blks working together" and wondering where the alliance broke, but dont acknowledge that it was *White* Jews who broke away, and that the *brief* relationship was fraught with paternalism and white-horses
WHILE IT WAS HAPPENING
On TOP of that, wJews like to frame the Civil Rights era as some sort of defining moral compass while simultaneously denying 1-Historically documented racism against JOCs within Jewish communities in the centuries before then
Or 2-The fact that slavery was an industry that wJews--while not the *orchestrators* or *mechanism* behind--*also* partook in. So, at best, the Civil Rights involvement should be seen less as this white-horse altruism
And more something akin to at least an *attempt* to do Teshuva/even the scales, just judging by the couple centuries of involvement alone. The Attorney General, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State of the Confederacy, after all, was Jewish. Judah P. Benjamin.
It then stands to reason that Blk America doesn't *owe* Jews for Civil Rights any more than modern Jews would *owe* Germans for standing up now in this moment, as if even non-Nazi Germans weren't even tangentially involved in the Holocaust
On top of *THAT*, theres this myth where Jews were disproportionately involved in Civil Rights=The Jewish community was disproportionately involved in Civil Rights. Which is untrue.
If 2 in 10 White Americans were involved in Civil Rights but 4 in 10 Jews were, then yes, thats disproportionate representation. But still means that *6 in 10* Jews were *not*.
Yet the narrative champions the FAR LESS THAN HALF of the Jewish community involved in Civil Rights, and claims it as an absolute moral narrative for the Jewish community as a WHOLE.
