why taking ownership of POC artistic creation is an exploitative practice of cultural imperialism- a thread
with recent events, the idea of ownership and who deserves credit seems to be up for debate. in our global context, where western media holds central power over the success of non-western artists and the standards for what is considered "good art", ownership is political
taking possession over the cultural production of minority (I say minority in the context of race in the west) is exploitation. riding on the success of those who have managed to make it big in a white dominated industry is exploitation
it is not a "cultural difference" of how we celebrate success. it needs to be contextualized in the long history of white artists and creators taking art from minority cultures and using that to become successful without ever paying tribute to the original creators
i.e. see elvis presley, the genre of jazz and hip hop, etc. there is a reason why fans are upset by this constant co-opting of ownership. there is a valid critique of the way this erases the accomplishments of creators that had they been white, had different success
so when we say "stop taking credit from BTS" we really mean "stop using your white privilege to insert yourself and take ownership of something you would never have been able to accomplish without these minority creators"
