We, unfortunately, are going to hear more stories of parents dropping off covid+ kids at daycare because they have to work. But we really need to talk about why this is happening and will continue to happen and, it has everything to do with capitalism.
I would urge us all to think critically before responding to stories like these when we hear them. Our 1st response shouldn't be "these parents are irresponsible", rather "why doesn't everyone have FREE healthcare (whether employed or not) & why doesnt everyone have FULL benefits
Having free healthcare and full benefits would allow for parents to stay home when they (or their children) are sick and still be paid.
We've been led to believe that healthcare is not a human right smh. It is! Additionally, capitalism demands that you get the most out of people while giving them as little as possible (exploitation).
So we work ppl for 8-12 hours/day with little to no benefits & w/poverty wages consistently forcing ppl to make tough choices like, "do I drop my kid off at daycare while they are sick so i can get paid & put food in our mouths or do i stay home w/my sick kid & miss work & pay"
Instead of asking why parents would take their covid+ kids to daycare so they can go to work, we should be asking:

why do people make poverty wages?

why are there people who work full time and are still poor?

why isn't healthcare FREE & accessible to everyone?
why doesn't everyone who works have access to benefits (why is this not incentivized for small business owners?)

why haven't we banned the box nationally?

why are employers allowed to deny employees birth control coverage
why has the government given people a one-time $1,200 check for a pandemic that will last at least a year (possibly longer)?

why did millionaires and billionaires profit from the covid small business loans instead of actual small business owners?
I'm not in the business of shaming people who are trying to survive capitalism. Instead I question, critique and fight this capitalist system that continually forces us to make these incredibly difficult decisions on a daily basis.
So instead of us being enraged at parents who feel they have no choice but to go to work, re-direct that rage to the system that continually exploits us and throws us scraps to fight over. Commit to dismantling capitalism and doing the work to decolonize.
