/ There's a slight increase from last year when the UCP first cut $136m before cutting another $128M during the pandemic. However they do not calculate for increased student enrollment and when calculating back to 2018 is roughly a 4.5% decrease which is about $500 per student. https://twitter.com/ColinAitchison/status/1283274920743452672
/ This also does not take into account huge increase in costs especially with new insurance regulations the UCP brought in of up to 400% as well as utilities etc. As division funding includes many increasing costs for school maintenance, bussing, etc.
/ Therefore these increased inflationary costs leave divisions with only one place to cut which is STAFF! Many divisions are being forced to cut staff by up to 10% the vast majority which are teachers & assistants. Children will have fuller classes & less supports.
/ As opposed to what the UCP would have you believe there were no huge increases to public ed funding during the NDP. There was some extra funding in the way of grants that were quickly cut with the UCP. Base per student funding has not increased in 11 years!
/ All these cuts are going to especially hurt students as there is still no word on any increased funding for return to school in fall. There will no doubt be huge extra costs for divisions. I really hope they do better for OUR children! They deserve more!
