Here are some findings from last Friday’s @StatCan_en June jobs report tracking women’s economic recovery. I will be posting a Research Note on “Behind the Numbers” shortly #canfem 1/8

Since April, women have recouped roughly one-third of Feb-Apr employment losses (35.8%). That’s an increase of 550,000 jobs since April. Core-aged women have posted larger gains than youth & older women. The recovery among men is more advanced across the board 2/8

A large group of women have left the labour force. Among core-age workers, the proportion of women “not in the labour force” was down from a high of 22.2% in April, but still 8.3 % points higher than in Feb 3/8

Mothers are facing huge barriers with no coherent or safe plan to reopen child care and schools in sight. Lone-parent mothers w/ kids > 6 have only recouped 19.6% of their Feb-Apr losses. Employment still much lower among moms of school-aged kids 4/8

The rate of recovery among low-wage female employees is lagging that of low-wage male employees by 10 % points (74.8% vs. 84.7%). The recovery of all low-wage employees is lagging that of higher waged workers (78.8% vs 96.7%) 5/8

Likewise, temporary female workers are only 82% of the way back to February levels, recouping only 42.0% of losses. Permanent female workers are 92% of the way back 6/8

Immigrant women are being hard hit in this recession. They represent roughly one-quarter of female workers (26.1%) but account for over one-third of employment losses (37.4%) 7/8

Service employment especially in “high proximity” industries remains far below pre-COVID levels. There can be no recovery with investment in women’s employment and comprehensive, high quality, publicly managed caring services serving all populations across the country 8/8
