THREAD: Are you sitting on an underreported story about INCARCERATION in your own country? We are looking to fund more stories about #incarceration from all over the world—not just the United States! Check out these examples of past Pulitzer-supported work for inspiration. ⬇️ ⬇️
1) Grantee @JuliaRendleman's work for @RTDNEWS is a great example of incarceration reporting for a medium-sized daily newspaper in Richmond, VA. Julia's reporting shows that one real challenge of incarceration is restarting your life after you get out. https://bit.ly/2UUoSNf
2) @JuliaRendleman's work is also a good example of using photojournalism to tackle the unique problems faced by incarcerated women. We are open to proposals from many mediums, so think outside of the box about how you can best tell your story. https://bit.ly/2UUoSNf
3) Another inspirational photographic project is grantee @llamistica's award-winning reporting on overcrowded women prisons in Venezuela, where women await trial for years, often for minor offenses, or for politically-motivated charges. https://bit.ly/38Tg2Vn
5) Collaboration is key. This Pulitzer-supported story came from @raelnb of the Mountain West News Bureau, a public radio collective in the Mountain West. Rae's reporting asks whether prisons should be run for profit—the evidence suggests not. https://bit.ly/32iz2LN
6) Effective reporting changes minds—and policy. Following a nine-month Pulitzer-supported investigation into Maryland's child support system by @baltimoresun, the Maryland legislature overwhelmingly passed two bills aimed at reforming child support orders. https://bit.ly/2DBqTYx
7) The bills focus on two key issues examined by our grantees: prison debt and imputed income. They now await the signature of @GovLarryHogan. This is an incredible impact. Thanks to grantees @yvonnewenger, @christinezhang, and @lloyd1fox for their work! https://bit.ly/2DBqTYx
8) There is no magic formula for a successful Pulitzer Center proposal. But you can use these examples ⬆️ of past Pulitzer-supported work to guide your process. Be ambitious and don’t forget to include a strong publication plan! Here’s the link to apply ⬇️ https://bit.ly/38T1BR9
