I don’t know how else to put it. Lots of media outlets find Iranian butcher Qasem Soleimani more sympathetic than Bari Weiss.

🧵THREAD🧵

We’ll start with @CNN. Soleimani was “revered and powerful” where Weiss was “controversial” for criticizing progressive culture.
They’re far from alone.

For @washingtonpost, Soleimani received a “massive display of grief and solidarity” whereas Weiss “attracted considerable controversy”
I am less than surprised to see @nytimes, Weiss’s former employer, added to the list.

Soleimani was the “master of Iran’s intrigue” who “built a Shiite axis of power” whereas Weiss “has been known to question aspects of social justice movements.”
@VanityFair may be my favorite.

Soleimani was “assassinated” and is justly being mourned, whereas “for Bari Weiss it was bound to end like this”
@businessinsider is happy to air Iranian propaganda about nightmare scenarios for the “elite commander” Soleimani.

Weiss is a “controversial editors” who as been “slammed” by her colleagues for wrongthink.
@voguemagazine says “the justification for bumping off Soleimani took on a distinct dog-ate-my-homework feeling” whereas Weiss’s letter was “unusually combative, vaguely threatening.”
@latimes says that Soleimani was a “commander widely seen as a pillar of the Islamic Republic” in the midst of US sanctions.

Weiss is “a controversial figure inside and outside of the paper.”
@curaffairs is fine to eulogize Soleimani and criticize Weiss’s supposed attempts to “feign persecution”
Even the Canadian press got into the mix! Here’s @nationalpost.

Soleomani is a “famed general” whereas Weiss is a “controversial columnist.”
@MiddleEastEye had a play-by-play for Soleimani’s death full of “weeping and beating their chests in homage to the slain general” but are concerned about Weiss’s “history of trying to silence the voices of Palestinian rights advocates.”
And the galaxy brains chimed in on Twitter. @nberlat is concerned that Soleimani is painted as someone who “occupies the narrative position of the bad guy” but Weiss is leaving because “no one else will tolerate her shoddy work and mistreatment of other staff.”
@aaronjmate thinks we need to expand our perspectives on whether Soleimani was a “bad actor” and not someone who was deservedly mourned. Weiss apparently does not deserve that same level of nuance.
Never change, @cenkuygur
And I, for one, am stunned to see @mehdirhasan react this way.
Anyway, we live in a broken and deranged society and @bariweiss is the latest victim.
This thread pissed off enough of the right people where I feel like I’m over the target.
Anyway, this thread helped me learn that Parker Molloy and I have different senses of humor, which was shocking.
