here's a true story. i went to brandeis for my masters and i did a lot of work in the international policy school. brandeis has a wonderful international policy program with many students from around the world. i shared courses with palestinians, kenyans, ugandans, so many more.
in a course on education reform policy as a means of reparations post-civil conflict, which was taught by a brilliant israeli teacher, one of my classmates from kenya brought up that jewish people run the world media so it would make sense that they would lead the way.
he meant absolutely no harm by it whatsoever. i did group projects with this fellow. he was always so cheerful and so kind to me. i was really taken aback given that the man chose a jewish school and here he was saying something pretty antisemitic.
the professor looked at me in particular as if to tell me to be quiet and let her handle it (i think...i was actually the only jewish person in that class besides her). she calmly explained to my classmate that jewish people don't actually run the world media.
she used data and examples and it only took about 5 minutes over all and he said oh that's so strange. i don't know why i believed that. and we moved on. i wasn't offended. i didn't feel unsafe. i certainly still liked the man.
there's a difference, is what i'm trying to say. between these incidents, and white supremacists shooting up a synagogue or spray painting swastikas on garages. there's a difference between what happened in that class and christian zionists.
jewish people who have any sense of self-preservation know that the more pressing matter is the rhetoric coming from people with power who mean violence, than the people who simply do not know but are ready to listen and go oh wild, i didn't realize, and move on.
now i'm not keen on black hebrew israelites. i also don't think nick cannon is one. furthermore he opened himself up to correction. i'm not scared of the nick cannons of the world. i'm scared of the 4/8chan trash people of the world who want to murder jewish people.
the more attention we give to these instances of anti-semitism, and the less we focus on really smashing white supremacy, the longer jewish people are in danger. we are literally playing right into the system that puts jewish people between other marginalized groups.
use your brain for a second, think about who holds power in the world, and then align yourself with the people who actually want to change the dynamic. not the people who want to perpetuate it by firing black people for being anti-semitic instead of holding people accountable.
